Interface overview

When you open a photo to edit in Photomator, you'll notice two main sections of your workspace — the toolbar at the top and your photo in the center. The photo editing mode is activated when you select a tool. The options for that particular tool appear in a separate sidebar and change when you select a different tool.

Toolbar

The Photomator toolbar appears at the top of the screen, containing all the main tools and features you need to edit photos.

iPhone

1. Go back to the Photos or Files browser Tap Cancel to return to the Photos or Files browser. If you have already applied some changes to a photo and would like to save them, tap Save in the dialog that appears, if not — tap Discard Changes to revert all changes and return to the browser.

2. Undo, redo, or revert all changes Tap to undo the changes you've made to a photo step by step. You can also touch and hold to redo the last action or choose Revert to Original to remove all changes from any of the previous editing sessions. In the Photos browser, you can also touch and hold the thumbnail of a photo and choose Revert to Original from the Quick Actions menu that appears.
3. Comparison slider Tap Compare to show a split preview of your photo. Drag the split preview slider to compare the photo before and after edits.
4. Photomator tools Tap any of the Photomator tools to start adjusting colors, cropping, improving image quality and more.

5. More settings Tap More to see options for sharing and exporting photos, viewing their information, copying or pasting adjustments, and turning a number of Photomator settings on or off to suit your workflow best.
6. Save and close a photo Tap Done to save the changes you made to a photo, close it, and return to the Photos or Files browser.

iPad

1. Go back to the Photos or Files browser Tap Cancel to return to the Photos or Files browser. If you have already applied some changes to a photo and would like to save them, tap Save in the dialog that appears, if not — tap Discard Changes to revert all changes and return to the browser.

2. Undo changes Tap to undo the changes you've made to a photo step by step. You can also touch and hold to redo the last action.
3. Revert to Original Tap to revert the photo to the original. All changes from all previous editing sessions will be removed. In the Photos browser, you can also touch and hold the thumbnail of a photo and choose Revert to Original from the Quick Actions menu that appears.

5. Name of the photo or tool Shows the name of the photo or a selected tool. When working in the Files browser, you can rename photos in their original folder. Touch and hold the thumbnail, then choose Rename to do so.

7. More settings Tap More to see options for sharing and exporting photos, viewing their information, copying or pasting adjustments, and turning a number of Photomator settings on or off to suit your workflow best.
8. Save and close a photo Tap Done to save the changes you made to a photo, close it, and return to the Photos or Files browser.

Mac

1. Go back to the Photos or Files browser Click to return to the Photos or the Files browser. If you have already applied some changes to a photo and would like to save them, click Save in the dialog that appears, if not — click Discard Changes to revert all changes and return to the browser.
2. Compare Click and hold Compare to quickly preview your photo before and after edits. You can also Command-click the comparison button to turn on the comparison slider and show a split view of your photo.
3. Revert to Original Reverts the photo to the original. All changes from all previous editing sessions are removed. You can also Control-click a photo thumbnail directly in the Photos or the Files browsers and choose Revert to Original from the Quick Actions menu.

4. Zoom Drag the Zoom slider to quickly zoom in and out of the photo or click the buttons on each side of the slider.

5. Name of the photo In the Files browser, you can Control-click the name of the photo to see where it's located on your Mac and open this location or its enclosing folder. You can rename photos either in their original folder on your Mac or in Photomator directly by Control-clicking the thumbnail of your photo in the Files browser and choosing Rename.

6. Photomator tools Tap any of the Photomator tools to start adjusting colors, cropping, improving image quality and more.

7. More settings Click More to share and export photos, view their information, copy or paste adjustments, and turn a number of Photomator settings on or off to suit your workflow best.
8. Save and close a photo Click Done to save the changes you made to a photo, close it, and return to the Photos or Files browser.

Filmstrip browser

When editing photos, you can turn on the filmstrip to browse the photos in the album or folder you're working in without leaving the editing interface.

The filmstrip lets you conveniently browse photos, access more editing options, or select photos to quickly jump into editing. Simply scroll the filmstrip to find the photo you want to edit, then click or tap its thumbnail. If you swipe directly on a photo, the next or previous photo in the filmstrip will be automatically selected.

If swiping to show the next or previous photo doesn't work on iPhone or iPad, zoom out of the image and make sure the Crop and Repair tools are not selected.

iPhone

Turn the filmstrip browser on or off

1. Open a photo, then tap More in the toolbar.
2. Tap Settings and make sure Filmstrip is turned on.

If the Color Adjustments tool is turned on and the Presets bar is visible instead, tap the Color Adjustments tool in the toolbar to deselect it, or tap More in the bottom right of your photo and choose Show Filmstrip.

When editing in the Files browser, you'll need to permit the filmstrip to access your photos first. You can tap More in the toolbar, then choose Give Access to Filmstrip. Then navigate to the folder you're editing and choose open.

Quickly edit photos using the filmstrip

If you touch and hold a thumbnail in the filmstrip, it'll open the Quick Actions menu. Here, you can copy or paste adjustments from photo to photo, run pinned workflows, add photos to Favorites, delete them, and more.

If the Color Adjustments tool is turned on and the Presets bar is visible, tap the Color Adjustments to deselect it or tap More in the bottom right of your photo and choose Show Filmstrip.

When editing in the Files browser, you'll need to permit the filmstrip to access your photos first. You can tap More in the toolbar, then choose Give Access to Filmstrip. Then navigate to the folder you're editing and choose open.

Turn the filmstrip browser on or off

Open a photo, then do any of the following:

• Choose View > Show Filmstrip / Hide Filmstrip

• Press Option ⌥ + S on your keyboard.

• If the Color Adjustments tool is turned on and the Presets bar is visible, click More at the bottom of the Color Adjustments pane, and choose Hide Presets.

Quickly edit photos using the filmstrip

If you Control-click a thumbnail in the filmstrip, it'll open the Quick Actions menu. Here, you can copy or paste adjustments from photo to photo, run pinned workflows, add photos to Favorites, delete them, and more.

Presets bar

Photomator offers a range of beautiful color adjustment presets designed to let you quickly change the look and feel of a photo. You can browse and apply the presets using the presets bar that is organized into 6 main categories on iPhone and iPad — Black and White, Cinematic, Classic Films, Landscape, Night, and Custom — and 4 more categories on Mac — Modern Films, Vintage, Urban, and Pixelmator Pro.

iPhone and iPad

Turn the Presets bar on or off

1. Open a photo, then tap More in the toolbar.
2. Tap Settings and make sure Presets is turned on.

If you touch and hold a preset in the Presets bar, it'll open the Quick Actions menu with options for sharing, duplicating, redefining the preset, and more. You can also touch and hold the preset label to manage the entire preset collection: share, move it, view and edit details, and more.

Mac

Turn the Presets bar on or off

By default, the Presets bar appears whenever you select the Color Adjustments tool.

If the Presets bar has been turned off, you can turn it back on by doing any of the following:

• Open a photo, then choose View > Show Presets from the view menu at the top of your screen.

• Press Option ⌥ + P on your keyboard.

If you Control-click a preset in the Presets bar, it'll open a menu with options for exporting, redefining, renaming the preset, and more. You can also Control-click the preset label to manage the entire preset collection: share, view, and edit details, and more.

Workspace colors

In Photomator, you can customize your workspace colors to enhance photo editing or simply add a personal touch to your work area.

iPhone and iPad

Change the background color of your workspace

1. Open any photo in Photomator.

2. Tap More in the toolbar and choose Background Color.
3. In the Background Color settings choose your desired color.

Change the accent color of your workspace

Accent colors allow you to customize the color of buttons, menu and text highlights, selected file highlights, and more.

1. Tap in the Files or Photos browser.
2. Under Accent Color, choose the color you want for your workspace.

Mac

Change the appearance of Photomator on your Mac

1. In Photomator, choose Photomator > Settings from the Photomator menu at the top of the screen.

2. In the General tab, select Light, Dark, or Auto appearance.

   • "Dark" is a consistent dark appearance that doesn't change. This appearance is default to Photomator, making it ideal for focusing on the content of the photo you're editing.

   • "Light" is a consistent light appearance that doesn't change.

   • "Auto" switches the appearance from light to dark based on the daily schedule you set on your Mac.

Change the background color of your workspace

1. Open any photo in Photomator.

2. Tap More in the toolbar and choose Background Color.
3. In the Background Color settings, choose your desired color.
