Sync edits with Pixelmator Pro

If you're working with Photomator on Mac and have Pixelmator Pro installed, you can use the edit syncing functionality to seamlessly move your edited photos between apps and work on them using each app's unique set of tools. For example, you can edit a photo in Photomator and then send it to Pixelmator Pro to add text, shapes, paint on it, and more.

Share an edited photo to Pixelmator Pro

When exporting an edited photo from Photomator to Pixelmator Pro, all nondestructive changes like crops, color adjustments, masks, and perspective corrections will remain editable in Pixelmator Pro.

To share a photo to Pixelmator Pro, do any of the following:

  • Control-click a photo in the Photomator browser or the filmstrip and choose Edit with Pixelmator Pro.

  • Choose Image > Edit with Pixelmator Pro from the Image menu at the top of the screen.

  • Press Command ⌘ + Return ↵ on your keyboard.

  • If you edited an image from Photos, you can also open it using the Pixelmator Pro extension in Photos.

Send the edited photo back to Photomator

To share an image back to Photomator, do any of the following:

  • Images shared from the Photos browser: Choose File > Modify Original in Photos from the file menu at the top of the screen.

  • Images shared from the Files browser: Choose File > Save from the file menu at the top of the screen.

  • Save the edited photo in the Pixelmator Pro extension in Photos.

  • RAW photos: Saving edited RAW images back to Photomator is not currently possible, but you can choose File > Save and save the image to JPEG, HEIC, or TIFF file format with the option to save edits to a sidecar file selected.

Important: Photomator doesn't support certain types of layers and edits from Pixelmator Pro, including shapes, text, and clipping masks.

Open photos edited using Pixelmator Pro

You can reopen photos edited in Pixelmator Pro as you would any other photos. However, certain layers and edits from Pixelmator Pro, such as shapes, text, and clipping masks are not supported in Photomator. If you proceed with editing these photos in Photomator, you will need to flatten these elements.

There are two options for opening Pixelmator Pro files with layers in Photomator:

  • Flatten and Edit Original: Merges all non-editable layers and overwrites the original image.

  • Flatten and Duplicate: Creates a copy of the original image with all non-editable layers and edits a merged copy.
