I have created this thread for anyone who has created any filters to post them here. (Makes it easier for users to find them).

I have just delved into filter creation, and am rather green. At the moment I am just experimenting. I hope to get better at it as time goes on.

I hope you have fun with any filters that are posted here.

Hey folks,

with quite a bit of help from Antony, I created my first Quartz composition to be used in Pixelmator. Here is a small preview of what it does:

Image

If you like it, you can download it here: http://drp.ly/1pupdb
INSTALLATION:
Just drop into /Library/Compositions/

Have fun!

Edit: Inserting images in BBCode doesn't really fulfill my expectations...

I have updated all my filters to smooth out all the controls. 'Fun Filter 3' replaces all previous versions of my fun filters. So if you have them installed, you might want to trash them.

This installer will install them in the correct location so that they are available for all users. Please read each stage of the installation process carefully.

After some feedback, I have improved My Multi-Mode sharpening filter. The Unsharp Mask now gives much better results. I have decided to just have the one version.

If you have installed the previous versions, then you can trash those if you wish.

It will appear in FILTER>QUARTZ COMPOSER>OTHER.

This installer will install it in the correct location so that it is are available for all users. Please read each stage of the installation process carefully.

EDIT:- This will only run correctly on Snow Leopard in Pixelmator 1.6. I will work on Making it Leopard compatible.

I have been at it again! This one was by chance.
I decided to have a go at an animated generator. So opened a new file using a template and what appeared was a simple animation that produced this:-

Image

Then I wondered if I could make it into a real cloud generator. After a few hours of modification, I came up with one that generated this:-

Image

This is actually two cloud layers of different luminosity (controlled by the user) and a blue background layer.
I removed some of the controls that were used for the animation as they were not needed. Others I made static and user controlled.

You should place it in MACINTOSH HD > LIBRARY > COMPOSITIONS.

It will appear as 'Clouds 3'in the filter menu in QUARTZ COMPOSER > GENERATOR.

I have tested this in Snow Leopard and Pixelmator 1.6. Also in 1.5.1 and it works fine

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/Clouds%203.qtz

I have Modified this to contain a second generator. It is named 'Clouds 4' and will appear in the same menu. Also, I have removed the blue tint that surrounds the clouds. (You can notice this from the image above).

This will also work in 1.6 and 1.5.1

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/Clouds%204.qtz

And one more. This has three cloud generators in it and is named 'Clouds 5'.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/Clouds%205.qtz

TIP:- Change the cloud layer blending mode to 'Hard Light' for a nice effect.

UPDATE 01/08/10 :- I have added Saturation control to 'Clouds 4' and 'Clouds 5' generators. I initially thought it was of no use, but since have changed my mind.

Could you please direct any bugs, comments or questions about these filters to me in the Quartz composer questions thread located here:- http://www.pixelmator.com/support/viewt ... 3&start=15

I would love to hear any ideas for improving them.

I hope you enjoy using these as much as I did making them.

If any of you are scared away from trying out these filters by the warning message given above by the Pixelmator team, don't be.

By third party, that means any filter not created by the Pixelmator team.

That means obviously any user created filters. (All you need to do is stop using the filter and leave a message for the creator). This also includes all the NI filters, AND in this context, could include any filter created by Apple (Unless modified by the Pixelmator Team).

By malfunctioning of hardware and software, this will be rectified by a reboot. And does not mean physical damage.

Remember that all image filters lie dormant until called by the user through Pixelmator, or any image editing software that can access them.

My filters have been thoroughly tested. (I will not make any filters available for download that are causing problems on my system). And where possible, I will make them compatible for use with Leopard and Pixelmator 1.5.1

I recommend trying the filters on a small image first. (640x480 for example), to see that they function correctly.

Be cautious, but do not be frightened away.

Here is one of my latest filters. The 'Sphere Image Wrap'. It allows you to drag any image into a window in the filter dialog box, and then wraps it around a sphere.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/Sphere%2 ... 20Wrap.qtz

Place it in MACINTOSH HD>LIBRARY>COMPOSITIONS.
It will appear in the filter menu under QUARTZ COMPOSER>GENERATOR.

This is what will appear when you run the filter. The image was kindly donated by Grnapple. And is the default image when it is first selected from the menu.

Image

Enjoy.

I am curious as to whether anyone is actually using my filters.

I have been busy creating new ones, and wondered if this image would spark some interest.

Image

I created this with the help of my two latest filters. Text Wrap and Super-Emboss.(The Chrome effect text was also created with my emboss filter). The drop shadows were created using someone elses filter, but cannot remember where it is posted on the forum.

You can download the Super-Emboss filter here:-

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/Super%20Emboss.qtz

EDIT:- This link now downloads my latest version of the filter (updated on Friday 3rd September 2010). If you downloaded the filter before then, you just need to download and install again to update the filter.

Note that this will only work correctly in Pixelmator 1.6.

Could you please direct any bugs, comments or questions about this filter to me in the Quartz composer questions thread located here:- http://www.pixelmator.com/support/viewt ... 3&start=15

If someone shows some interest, I will make my Text Wrap filter available for download also.

Antony:

"grnapple" asked that you put the text wrapping application on the site - that you were going to at some point. My question was how to curve text around an object . 'grapple' referred me to you and asked the above. Am I going to be able to access the text wrapping option?

Thanks!

Ok. Here it is. My text Wrap Filter.

NOTE:- This filter only performs correctly in Pixelmator 1.6

This will wrap text around a circular path. (Perhaps I should have named it better).

First a few things to mention on the filter and it's use.

1. This is only my second revision of the filter, so there's room for improvement.

2. You need to create the text first and then convert the text to pixels.

3. As there is some natural expansion to the text when running the filter, you will either
1. need to have the text slightly smaller than you want before you run the filter or
2. resize the text after running it.
Option 1 is the preferred way.

4. The text will initially need to be at the bottom of the image before you run the filter. While the filter is active you have got the option to move the text around with the rope.

5. As you move the text towards the top of the picture, the text starts to get distorted. So it is best to have the text towards the middle of the image while you are adjusting the settings. You can then move the text to the top after you have finished with the filter. (This is one of the things I am looking into).

6. Initially, the rope will be misplaced from the text. I am 99% sure this is related to the transparency bug that Pixelmator is currently suffering from. You just need to move the rope slightly and it lines up with the text again.

After all that, here it is!

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/Text%20Wrap.qtz

Enjoy!

I have updated my Text Wrap filter. The link in my post above will download the latest revision.

I have overcome one problem and have an explanation for the other one.

First the easy one.

In point 6. in my post above about the initial misplaced rope. I have sorted that, and now the rope and text are in alignment when the filter is first run.

About point 5. in my post above about text distortion. I am unable to solve this, but I have an explanation as to why this happens. I will try to make this as easy to understand as possible.

The text distortion only seems to occur when the diameter of the circle you are wrapping around becomes closer than 100 Pixels away from the total size of narrowest sides of the image. That means if the height is the narrowest, then the circle diameter must be at least 100 pixels smaller than that. (50 Pixels from the top and 50 Pixels from the bottom when the rope is positioned dead centre of the image). If you keep within those boundarys Then the text distortion does not occur. (Even if you move the wrapped text off of the sides of the image).

I hope that this is clear enough. Please feel free to ask questions about this problem.

Hi there,

This is the latest version of my Super Emboss filter.
"Super Emboss 4".

This is what my friend Grnapple created using this filter, plus my torchlight filter.
Image

I ran my emboss filter on this image, and created this effect:-
Image

And again with different settings
Image

It comes in a zipped file complete with instructions and three copyright-free texture images.

Download it here:-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/Super%20Emboss%204.zip

If you wish to download the instruction beforehand to see how it works, then you can download it here:-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/Super%20 ... %20use.pdf

The installation instructions are as in my posts above.

I have updated my text wrap filter again for wrapping text around a circular path.

You need to start with the text in the centre of the image. Preferably the full width of the image. You have the option of scaling the size when the filter is running.

Download it here:-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/Text%20Wrap.qtz

You can see what it does in my first post about my Super-Emboss filter A FEW POSTS UP.

It will appear in the FILTER > QUARTZ COMPOSER > DISTORTION menu.

Now for my Torchlight filter.

Unlike the Stock Spotlight filter, this is designed to run on a blank layer above your image.

It has been used in this image created by Grnapple.

And yet another one of my filters.
This is a black and white conversion filter with presets. This allows you to convert a color image to black and white. The result you achieve is governed by the adjustment color, blending mode and some other adjustments.

Hi, it's me again.

I have revamped the Rounded Rectangle routine from my combo filter posted above, and published it as a single filter. It will work on both transparent and Image layers.

I have tested this on 1.5.1, and it works correctly, although only on a transparent layer. Also I have increased the range on the height to allow for portrait images.

It is now much easier to use, with fewer controls to worry about.

This is the filter dialog box:-

Image

It can be downloaded here:-

Put it into MACINTOSH HD > LIBRARY > COMPOSITIONS

And it will appear in the filter menu under QUARTZ COMPOSER > STYLIZE

Here is a simple, no frills circle filter that I have taken from my combo above.

Here is the dialog box:-

Image

It works on both transparent and image layers. In 1.5.1 it will only work correctly on a transparent layer.

You can download it from here:-

I am working on a simple new feature for it, but I am giving nothing away yet.

Hi Antony

I have recently created my first Quarts filter for Pixelmator; An offset filter, that basically tiles and moves your image (priceless if you want to create seamless tiles).

The filters and a complete tutorial of how the filter is build can be found at my blog:

Hi everyone.

Here is a filter that I created a while back, but never got around to publishing it.
AM-Neon Glow.

Here is an example of what it creates.

This is the original image.
Image

Here run with just the neon effect.
Image

And here with elements of the original image brought back (Controlled by the bottom three sliders).
Image

You can download it from here:-

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/AM-Neon%20Lights.qtz

save it to MACINTOSH HD > LIBRARY > COMPOSITIONS.

It will appear in the filter menu under QUARTZ COMPOSER > STYLIZE.

Hi everyone.

A while back, I said that I was working on a new feature for my circle filter. Well, here it is. Not only the circle filter, but the rounded rectangle filter also. A centering indicator.
I wanted something that was a highly visible indication that they were off center.
When would you use this? Well, if you have moved them off center, made adjustments to the color, shape etc and want to get them back to the center without clicking the reset button and loosing all your adjustments, you just switch this feature on. This is Pixel perfect centering, so I have added a tolerance slider to add some leeway, just in case you only need it roughly in the center.
As soon as you move the rope to the center, your original image will re-appear. If you are working on a transparent layer, then only the center spot will appear when it's off center.

The image below shows it in action.

Image

I will be posting a link to the updated circle and rounded rectangle filters within a day or so.

Watch this space!

Hi everyone.

Well, my first experimental filter is here. I have created a introduction/Tutorial movie to show how it's used. And the filter is posted below it. Please view the video first.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/New%20Filter.mov

And here is the filter.
Please note that the image needs to be at 100% or less, and a full window to use this, otherwise the detection zones will be outside of the viewing area.

Install it to /library/compositions. It will appear in the filter menu in Quartz Composer/Stylize.

Hi Everyone,

I have just rewired my circle filter, and added some extra features. It now does ellipses.

I have created an introduction and tutorial video showing how it's used. I recommend watching it before using the filter.

You can download the filter here:-

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/AM-Circle%202.qtz

Save it to MACINTOSH HD > LIBRARY > COMPOSITIONS

It will appear as 'AM-Circle 2' in the filter menu under QUARTZ COMPOSER > STYLIZE.

Enjoy!

Hi Everyone.

I have completely re-developed my Sphere Image wrap 2 filter.
It now works on an image layer, and uses that image. You no longer have to drag an image into the filter dialog box.

It keeps the original layer image intact, but I have included an option to clear the background image if you wish.

Image

If you want to have a different image than the background image in the sphere, then just load the image you want as a layer above your background image, run the filter on that layer and tick 'Clear Background Image'. It will then show over the base layer.

It has now been renamed to 'AM-Sphere Image Wrap 2'

You can download it from here:-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/728236/AM-Spher ... ap%202.qtz

Place it in MACINTOSH HD>LIBRARY>COMPOSITIONS.
It will appear in the filter menu under QUARTZ COMPOSER>DISTORTION.

Enjoy.

Hi everyone.

Firstly, I would like to announce an upcoming update.
I have added a couple of new features to my AM-Super Emboss 4 filter. I have named it AM-Super Emboss 4.1 , the reason for this is that it is slightly slower and some of you would rather keep the older version. The new one will show separately in the filter list.

Now for the main reason for this post.

I have created a cut-down and specifically modified version of my AM-Super Emboss 4 filter for embossing text.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS FILTER HAS BEEN UPDATED SINCE THIS WAS FIRST POSTED.

I am always thinking of improvements for my filters, and this one is no exception. I have reduced the file size of the filter by around 50% AND added three new embossing types. (Two Conical for sharply defined embossing, and one Radial).

This is the dialog box:-

Image

And this is an example of what it can do:-

Credit for the Drop Shadow feature goes to Chamyky, who developed it and kindly gave me permission to use it in my filter. (The Position of the drop shadow is controlled by the rope).

You can download it here:-

PLEASE SEE THE NEW POST BELOW

EDIT 2. SORRY, BUT I HAVE UPDATED IT YET AGAIN!

I have added another control 'Diagonal Expansion'. This allows you to create 'Engraved text Embossing'. Here is an example :-

Original text:-

Here it is after processing with the filter:-

Image

Put it into MACINTOSH HD > LIBRARY > COMPOSITIONS

And it will appear as 'AM-Super Emboss 4 (Text Edition)' in the filter menu under QUARTZ COMPOSER > STYLIZE

Could you please direct any bugs, comments or questions about this filter to me in the Quartz composer questions thread located here:- http://www.pixelmator.com/support/viewt ... 3&start=15

Enjoy!

Hello again,

I have yet another update on my super Emboss 4 (Text edition) filter. Link to this can be found in my posts above.

But here I am sharing with you all, some examples of what you can produce with it using different fonts.

This filter performs a conversion to CIE L*a*b* color space, gaussian blurs the a* and b* color channels, and then converts back to RGB. Luminance noise is left alone. This results is a good reduction in chroma noise without losing detail, at the cost of some reduction in overall saturation. Generally, chroma noise elicits a far more negative reaction than luminance noise, so this strategy is a common noise reduction approach.

The filter presumes the starting color space is sRGB, the D65 white point, and the standard observer; but since these assumptions are used the both the forward and back conversions, it should work on any RGB image.

Result (using Strength = 5):

One big lesson learned with this project:

Always normalize your pixel values.

Core Image normally uses component values in the 0.0-1.0 range, but will allow you to use any vector magnitudes you want. E.g., CIE L*a*b* values normally run 0-100. It's possible to store these larger magnitudes into vec4's and stuff them back in the image; the problem is that some QC patches will clip these values to the 0.0-1.0 range, and some will not. Interestingly, this clipping is not consistent; the same patches in different parts of the processing flow may or may not clip. This can be demonstrated with CI kernel patches, too.

I can speculate that because it's path-dependent that it's something to do with the CI kernel compiler optimizer, but in the end it doesn't really matter.

The workaround is to always ensure you normalize values to 1.0 before returning the result. This caused me considerable blunt force trauma (head/desk imacts) while working on this composition.

Don't go too crazy with the Strength setting or it will cause color halos. Also, images with high local contrast transitions will halo at lower Strength settings. I recommend applying this filter first in any given processing workflow, especially before manipulating global or local contrast.

Future enhancements: I'm looking at implementing an edge-preserving blur filter; this would reduce or eliminate haloing (and may be useful elsewhere).

Enjoy.

Ashton,

I'm experimenting with your high-pass filter and I want to say I'm impressed. I've tried various other techniques and your filter appears to reveal subtle details and textures better than the others. It seems to be a refined design which is most appreciated, given what comes in the Pixelmator package.

Hi Antony

I've been trying out your emboss filter and I get an interesting problem.

I write some text and then move the location on the text. Then open the emboss filter and check the drop shadow, the drop shadow appears where the text was originally typed no the location that the text is.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a little bug. Also can angle and distance of the shadow be altered.

thanks

Marcel

Hi Guys,

I spent an entire day playing around in Quartz Composer trying to figure things out and my first offering is a little filter to add sparkles to your images. Please bare in mind, that this is my first attempt at doing anything like this, so please don't yell at me if it doesn't work correctly.

Download here: http://www.cjboco.com/projects.cfm/proj ... arkly/1.0/

Let me know if you like it. Open it up in Quartz Composer to see what I did and if you see room for improvement, let me know! Enjoy!

p.s. How the heck do you add images to your forum post?

i've been trying to compose something similar to Antony's sphere using cube instead. needles to say, i have gotten nowhere. i can create a cube and all that jazz, but cannot get it to where i can drag images onto each face/side while filter open in pixelmator. could someone help me please. i know how to get images onto each side of cube during the composition progress, just not how to leave them blank with an "Image (Required)" patch
also, none of my other qtz creations show up under "Filter-Quartz Composer" i do drop them into ~/Library/Composition

These filters are so amazing, and fun to work on specially emboss for my use of watermarks on my art work. I wonder if it's possible to have lens flare as well. Not just the kind what Adobe has, but the kind you find in J.J Abram's films like Star Trek and Super 8. You see the lens flare in many parts of his movie

On another Post, someone put the link to here and said the Antony made a White Balance adjustment filter. I don't see it anywhere? Am I missing it?

I haven't used Quartz Composer in over 5 years, but dredged up some old compositions I made back in the day and updated them for the Image Filter protocol. Some of them have held up well... here's an old one I called "Watercolor":http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3756273/Watercolor.qtz
